Figure 5.1 summarizes the perceived benefits of the video podcasting. In line with ideas stemming from the media richness debates, we recognised that the move to media-rich podcasts was not likely to improve learner achievement by default as, fundamentally, the instructional approach remained unchanged. Instead, we saw the benefits to learners as centring on:
- improving student cognition through improved information integration, reduced information redundancy and an improved representation of the dynamics of software operation
- improving teaching material flexibility by offering rewind and recap functionality and the ability to access learning materials flexibly through web-based streaming or as MP4 downloads to PCs or mobile devices
- improved student motivation through engagement with the mobile devices and podcasting technologies which are now an integrated component of student’s lives.
