The Beyond Distance Research Alliance, at the University
of Leicester, brings together teachers and researchers interested
in the field of innovation in teaching and learning, from
any discipline or level of education.
Research Focus: on the complex changes occurring in Higher
Education emerging from knowledge-technology-society transformations
of the early 21st Century with the strongest interest in creating
viable and preferred futures for learning. Within the ‘knowledge
society’ learning technology has become of the most
important features of the national and international economic,
social and cultural landscape – and somewhat of a battlefield
for beliefs, research and practical actions. Our outcomes
include commentary and modelling of the student learning experience,
change in educational institutions and the future for learning
Our philosophical perspectives:
- are clustered within knowledge constructivism in its
broadest sense with acknowledgement of the personal, situated,
mediated and social nature of learning.
- are multi disciplinary and level, with systems thinking
and problem solving as the binder
Our methodology is:
- focussed on practical action research embracing multiple
methodologies and triangulation of data and results leading
to..
- collaborative intervention in learning strategy, design
and delivery
- developing a special interest in the use of personal and
group cognitive mapping both as a research method and change
intervention tool
